Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-oriented therapy developed by Peter Levine to treat trauma and stress-related problems. It is based on the idea that trauma gets stuck in the nervous system when the body's natural stress response is not allowed to complete.
Brief summary:
- Focus on the body: SE works with bodily sensations rather than recounting traumatic events in detail.
- Regulation of the nervous system: By gradually and gently approaching traumatic memories, SE helps the client to restore balance to the nervous system.
- Dissolves frozen energy: Trauma is seen as ”frozen” survival energy (fight, flight or freeze) that needs to be released.
- Staged exposure: The therapist guides the client slowly, in small doses, to avoid being overwhelmed.
The aim is to help the individual feel safer, more present and regain physical and emotional self-regulation.
